Blame it on DNS

Blame it on DNS
Bogged by the peeves of your slow
Internet connection? One of the chief
suspects driving this is DNS or Domain
Name System as reported by Nominum,
a company selling DNS server software.
According to Paul Mockapetris, inventor
of DNS architecture and chairman and
chief scientist at Nominum, even if carriers
spend billions of dollars to build new
3G wireless networks, there is the need
to spend more for beefi ng up the DNS
capability. Pure bandwidth does not
solve the problem if DNS servers fail to
respond quickly.
DNS works as a phone book—it helps in
mapping the IP address of a computer with
the text-based domain name. For example,
if you try to open the web page of www.
chip-india.com, then the DNS will fi nd the
page and ensure that it is opens only on
your computer and in nobody else’s. Any
Internet user will use the DNS service run
by his service provider from their servers.
Now if the server of your Internet service
provider starts running slow, then the
service will drop queries. In other words,
it will fail to open or take longer time to
download the web page requested. The
service failure may also lead to delayed
sending/receiving of mails or poor
response time while playing a game.
A recent study conducted by VeriTest
(a software testing company) and
commissioned by Nomanium revealed that
Verizon’s Fios network and its DSL (digital
subscriber line), which was advertised as
the fastest broadband service, actually
had the worst service time. Joe Laszlo,
an analyst with another research fi rm,
acknowledged that mere increasing raw
bandwidth removes the bottlenecks but
inevitably exposes the fl aws existing at
the other part of the network. However, he
does not blame DNS completely for slow
response time. The service also depends
on how fast the browser in your computer
can process web pages or how quickly your
graphics card can render images.
